Because you told how many steps there were to each bedroom, I thought she was going to the princess's room, then checked that off and decided she was going to rat out the princess's tryst to the queen. Nope, still going. That innocuous detail about the steps to the rooms was beautifully placed and perfect for keeping the reader guessing. Also, the two voices were like the circling of the stairs.
